Scotland – a small country that has made a big impact on the world as we know it today.  Historically staggering rates of emigration means that you’re never very far from a Scot or the descendant of one. 

Reasons for leaving Scotland are numerous: history, social factors…some would even say the climate!   But where do these travellers end up?  What routes have they taken to lay down their new roots, and what remains today?

The Darien Venture sets out to trace the history of this wanderlust; from the ill-fated 17 century expedition to the Darien colony (which is where our story starts), reports from those who’ve stumbled across old Scottish settlements, right up to the modern day back-packing adventurers setting out to make their way in the world.
